Vai Palm beach
Vai palm forest lies in a beautiful valley, by a sandy beach just north of ancient Itanos. The 50-acre long forest is made up of the native Theophrastus palms – the largest colony not only in Greece but also in Europe. Some smaller clusters are found in Preveli near Agios Nikitas, in some SW Aegean islands, in Cyprus and in Turkey.
Many legends exist about the forest’s origins. Some say it was formed by the Phoenicians and some that it is the result of discarded pips left by the Egyptian soldiers of Ptolemy Philomater, the allied troops of Mithradates of Pontus, or even by Saracen pirates and invaders!
The glorious palms were not the only rare flora that bloomed here. Plants of African origin are also found in and around the area showcasing the intense biodiversity of this land. Additionally, the area lies along a major bird migration flightpath.
In terms of its setting, the soft lines of the horizon, the harmony of the rise and fall of the low hills and small plains, the slopes with their vineyards and olive groves, exotic colors, and dazzling light – all make it a remarkable place to experience. Taking the nearby presence of ancient cities and the historic monastery Toplou into consideration, the result is a unique combination of cultural, historical and environmental beauty.
