Preveli Beach
Preveli Beach & Lagoon is a must-visit Cretan destination. Located about 35km south of Rethymno and 10km east of Plakias, it features a fascinating scenery worth of its reputation. Also known as “Palm Beach” or “Phoenix”, due to the palm trees that spread over the Great River's shores. The beach is protected by the Natura 2000 program and therefore it is not organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. At the eastern part of the sea, there is a large stone shaped as a heart, which in combination with the view of the Libyan Sea, the river, and the gorge, makes Preveli one of the most romantic sights in Crete.
Preveli is also popular for its Monastery, that comprises two main chapels, the ruined monastery of St John the Baptist and the Monastery of St John the Theologian.
Accessing Preveli is possible by small boat from Agia Galini and Plakias or by car from the Monastery of Preveli and Drimiskiano Ammoudi. The most popular way is by boat, as driving there by car is a bit more adventurous. Taking a car will not leave you directly to the beach. You will need to park your car in the designated parking lot and walk through a rocky footpath for quite some time to get to the beach. So, if you choose this road make sure you’re up for the adventure!
