Chrissi island

Chrissi island

Chrissi (‘Golden Isle’ also named Isle of Donkeys) stretches 5 km long by 1km wide and its highest point (Kefala) is about 31m above sea-level.

This exotic, paradisiac destination is uninhabited, its beaches flaunting some of the clearest waters and the whitest of sands. A light hue of pink covers the entire coast from the crushed seashells washed out on the shore. This contrasts with the translucent, crystalline waters that glisten in the sun and the turquoise-colored sea render the island more than worthy of visiting.

The island hosts a large cedar forest, 85 acres long, home of some of the most impressive flora in the entirety of Europe. The island is part of the European Community’s network of protected landscapes of intense natural beauty – NATURA 2000, and of course, guarded by Greek legislation. 49 valid species of fossils have been identified in the volcanic rocks that make up a part of the island making it incredibly rich in terms of biodiversity.

Protecting Chrissi means camping is forbidden, as well as entering the forest whose surrounds are fenced off. Similarly, collecting sand and shells is not allowed.

Reaching the island includes taking a ferry from Ierapetra that runs daily from mid-May to late October. A trip of a little over an hour will take you to a small harbor on the south beach, at Vougiou Mati, where you can find a small tavern and taste local delicacies. The beach there has the most incredible golden sand  and shallow, clear water. There are umbrellas as well as large cedar trees providing shade to the visitors.

From the South beach a path winds its way through the sand-dunes and crosses the island, leading to the beaches of Belegrina, Hatzivolakas and Kataprosopo.

Kataprosopo beach, its direct translation ‘Face to face’ originating from from its location as it lies directly opposite an even smaller islet, is much less crowded with small pebbles and blue crystalline waters, perfect for families.

Hatzivolakas beach is rocky with white sand and shallow, clear waters. It is decorated on both sides with towering cedars that stretch out their shade, inviting vacationers to an unforgettable experience.

*TIP!

When taking the ferry for Chrissi from Ierapetra port, make sure you leave your car in a designated parking area to avoid any mishaps and unnecessary inconveniences!
